Photo of the Year 2025 - 1st place
This photo was taken in the South of China and documents one of the last two original cormorant fisherman who used to make their living with fishing. Their specifically trained cormorants used to dive into the water and catch the fish. These days there are only two gentlemen left who used to actually practice this tradition. These days they only perform this art of fishing for photographers as it became uneconomic to make a living with this type of profession and due to overfishing there is not many fish left in the river.
A villager on a remote island in the south of Vietnam tends to her husband's fishing net, a simple but essential tool that provides their livelihood. From a photographer's perspective I found it poetic that the fishing net itself resembled the waves of the blue seas where it is used.

This photo was taken in Venice. As you would expect, it was a typical day with countless tourists. I was drawn to take this photo as I felt it captured a moment of peacefulness amid all the chaos and noise - escapism from tourism.
